write-4Each Friday, the Five Minute Friday community gets together online and writes for five minutes. Timed and unedited we write, then post.

My hope is that for you these five minutes bring encouragement and direction as you seek to live a faith-filled and purposeful life.

to make suitable for a situation, to cause to survive under certain circumstances

Well, this weeks prompt couldn’t be more accurate for the way I have felt about this week. Things have not been routine with last minute schedule changes and kids home sick from school and getting projects done in our home. Routines have not been normal and I have certainly had to adapt to keep from stressing about it all.

To adapt is often something we fight. We think that things are set up to be a certain way and that’s the way they should be. Well, at least people who are wired to process life in ways that are similar to the way I am wired. I know there are those that thrive on the last minute changes and the slight chaos that comes from not really know what is coming next. Those people can have their fun!! I don’t enjoy living life like that, though I admire their flexibility and capacity to adapt.

And yet, to live in a way that rigid and unmoving is highly stressful! To not be able to adapt as life comes has the potential to create a lot of unpleasantness for all those involved. (Don’t ask how I know this.)

adapt

To survive, and survive well do we not need to be adaptable? Isn’t the ability to be able to accommodate the changing circumstances and situations of life a valuable quality. Yet, if we are always adapting where to do we ever stand? How do we do well the life we are to live if that life is ever changing?

I don’t know where I stand on this conundrum. Or if it is even a thing to consider too seriously. But, I think that it is important as we seek to live lives of purpose and faith that we have those areas that are firm. The non-negotiables. Don’t let everything be unmoveable, though. We all have to interact with the world around us, and the world is unpredictable. We do need to be able to adapt.

So today, whether you are stressed from trying to keep things always a certain way when you really need to adapt or whether you are worn out because nothing is ever the same and you are constantly adapting, let us choose just a couple of areas where we will stand firm. Determine your priority spaces of life, stand firm in those, and then let us together seek the wisdom and willingness to adapt as it is required.

So much of the writing that I do, is simply me processing the realities of my unpredictable life. Yet, even as I process, I greatly desire to help and encourage you as you learn to adapt to your life. If you are desiring to live more purposefully – if faith-filled intention is a reality you desire to grow in your life, I invite you to join me on the journey. I don’t have all the answers, but those that I have, I promise to share. And you can know that I am praying for you and cheering you on as you seek to walk a faith-filled, purposeful life.
